Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #63

-

Welcome back for another weekly TTM success post. I ran across a great story this week about a Val Kilmer Q n A / meet and greet. It started off great until his handlers noticed a few people in line with tons of stuff to get signed and announced he wouldn't be signing personal items because they gave 100 signed DVDs away. Now I'm not sure if they were dealers or just obsessed collectors but I'm leaning towards them being dealers. Any Collectors that have graphed in person have usually ran across a few of these people. The ones with large amounts of stuff to get signed and usually yes they are selling the autographs they get. I understand I guess the more items signed equals more $ but it can also turns celebs off from signing sometimes. When they see people coming after them with a ton of items to get signed they automatically think DEALER. Sure some celebs don't care but some do and why be greedy and take the chance of blowing the opportunity in the first place. If you take only a few items like three or less you probably have a better chance to get the graph and then if you need more bring a friend or try another day. This also goes for TTM graphing. Sure you can send 5-6+ pictures to get signed by why would you. Trust me I understand its hard to choose between pictures to send but sending them all isn't the answer. Addresses can get burnt out and celebs stop signing. Just like IP I try to limit my TTM items I send to 2 per attempt sometimes 3 tops and if I want more pictures signed I wait anywhere from 4 to 6 months and sometimes even a year later then write again. For big name celebs I usually just send one item and be thankful it returns signed. I see alot with the attitude of I can send as many as I want and I don't care if the address stops working or if the celebs stop signing because Iv already got an autograph so who cares about the next collector. That's the kind of attitude that's hurting the hobby and I hate to see it. Anyways on to this weeks successes. Monday brought four great returns. First an amazing return from boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. He signed both pictures we sent and took just under a month to return. Next a very cool return from Scott Grimes. IV been a fan of his since "Critters" and Winter loves "American Dad!". He's been in so many great films and only took twelve days to sign and return both pictures. The next return brought another great addition to my Trek Collection when both pictures returned signed from Charlie Brill who played in one of our favorite episodes"The Trouble With Tribbles" and only took a week to return. To finish off the day and after only a month Winter received both pictures back signed on the back of the photos with notes from Patricia Loud. For those that don't know Pat Loud was a part of the very first reality show "An American Family" that first aired on PBS back in the early 1970's. Tuesday brought two more great returns. First a very cool although smudged return from the writer of some of the best Star Trek TOS episodes D.C. Fontana. She signed both pictures we sent one was pretty smudged but one was ok and with a quick two weeks to return. To finish off the day another fast two week return for David Emge to sign both pictures we sent. Great addition to my Romero zombie film collection. Friday brought one more return. A possible secretarial from Jerry Lewis. I haven't had time to compare it yet but he usually does sec signatures now buy still occasionally signed so I'm not sure ill keep you updated as I find out more and it only took two months to return. To finish off this great TTM week Saturday brought one last return. After seven months we received both pictures back signed by Judge Joseph Wapner from The People's Court. That's it for this week. Have a great weekend and ill be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #62

-
Welcome back for another weekly TTM success post. Iv been seeing alot of arguments online with collectors saying dealers are killing the autograph hobby. While the hobby has definitely changed over the years I don't think all dealers are to blame. As long as there are famous people around to sign fans will want to collect and as long as there's fans collecting and celebs signing people are going to try and make a dollar by selling autographs. I see no problem with a good In Person autograph dealer. They have helped me obtain some amazing autographs that I just don't have the opportunity to get IP myself and they usually have better prices than you find on other sites. I do have a problem with greedy dealers and forgers that knowingly sell fake autographs to newer or unsuspecting collectors. I have a problem with the rude pushy dealers that shove kids and real fans out of the way. These are the ones that are giving good autograph dealers a bad name and turn celebs against signing. I see alot of collectors saying celebs stop signing because they see the autographs for sell online. Yes I have seen this happen sometimes but IV also seen alot more not care what so ever, with some even asking how much they are selling them for. We have even had them joke saying its fine as long as we send them a cut and we're not sellers but obsessed collectors we just love graphing. The funny thing is alot of the celebs that have stopped now sell their own autographs at conventions, private signings and off websites cutting the dealers out and letting fans get autographs straight from the source. So celebs are essentially becoming autograph dealers themselves. They don't get upset they just adapt and its a win win in my opinion. Fans get authentic autographs straight from the celebs and the celebs get the money someone else would have gotten from selling the autographs. Some donate the money to charities but some older celebs depend on autograph fees and are usually very responsibly priced so I don't mind purchasing. Now Im not talking about ones like the $800+ Harrison Ford private signing but the ones that sell autographs the normal fan can afford like in the $20-$100 price range. Autograph collecting is an amazing hobby that some have been lucky enough to turn into a business. Some dealers have helped advance the hobby others have left a tarnish that's given them all a bad name. So just remember not every dealer is crooked but there's more bad then good out there so do your homework. There's even websites out there dedicated to exposing the forgers and dealers that sell fake autographs I can't say it enough. Research is the key. Now on to this weeks TTM successes. Monday started the week off with five amazing returns. First after five months we received one of the two pictures back signed from Patricia Heaton. Winter loves "The Middle" so she's super happy with this one. Next after only three months I received my DVD cover back signed from Tommy Chong. I asked in my letter that if he ran into Cheech to get him to sign to but it only came back signed by Chong. Still a very cool success and hey I had to try. Next a very cool success from The Oak Ridge Boys. In just under a month both pictures returned signed by all four members and they even signed in different colors of ink that made the pictures look amazing. Next a super quick eleven days for legendary actor Martin Sheen to return. He signed both pictures we sent him plus he also signed and thanked us on our letter. To finish off the day and after 15 months we received both pictures back signed from Curtis Armstrong. IV been a fan since of his since "Revenge of the Nerds" and I'm glad he finally returned. Funny thing I had given up on this one and had just resent another request out the very same day my original attempt returned. Crazy timing. That's it for this week. Have a great weekend and ill be back next week with more TTM autograph collecting goodness.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #61

-
Hello and welcome back to another weekly TTM success post. I hope everyone had a great graphing week. This week I thought id talk about the steps I go through before I purchase an autograph. I see to many people getting ripped off on facebook deals or purchasing fakes off eBay. To many times have I seen new collectors buying horrible fake autographs of some rare expensive signers for prices that are just way to good to be true. Sure occasionally you can run across a authentic autograph for a really good deal but I'm talking about ones from celebs like The Beatles, Babe Ruth or Mantle big name autographs like that and they are selling for less than $100 when real authentic ones sell for hundreds and thousands of dollars. Just be careful. So if i see an autograph for sell the first thing that I do is see if the celeb is still living then I see if they sign free TTM. I can't see paying someone my hard earned money for an autograph that I can get for the cost of a few stamps and a little bit of my time. Sometimes the autograph you need can only be obtained by purchasing. Maby the celebs have passed away or they don't sign TTM and only sign IP or have stopped signing all together and leaving purchasing your only option. The next thing I do I research the celeb. If they died when did they die. You'd be surprised how many times I see autographs for sell that the items that have been "autographed" have been signed on items that hadn't even been made until after the celebs passed away. Check your dates! Even photos usually have a time stamp on the back. Check album dates, book printings, Copywrite dates, ect. Next I look to see if they signed alot over the years. Did the celeb sign for everyone they met or was the signer a recluse and rare signer. Next I pull up as many authentic examples of the signers signature that I can find. Not just a couple I mean 20 + take your time do your homework. With technology these days there's no excuse for not doing your research. Almost everyone has the internet in the palms of there hands. Google the celebs signatures and info. Just make sure you pull up authentic examples. And when all else fails and you're just not sure don't be afraid to ask other collectors. Sure not everyone is an expert on all autographs but there's a entire world of experienced collectors out there willing to help. After I determine its authentic then I look for the value so I dont over pay for an autograph. Always deal with well known reputable dealers. They tend to work with you if you have a problem with the item and they usually ship the items with plenty of protection. Always and i mean Always use tracking numbers because it covers both the buyer and seller if its gets lost or damaged in the mail. Try to avoid the scammers on facebook be wary of the ones looking to buy large quantities of high dollar autographs. They get people to send there items for trade or sale then never follow through or you get a empty box in return for your prized autographs. Anyways it all comes down to taking your time and doing all your homework. Ask questions. How, when and where was it signed. Ask for good clear close up photos to compare with. If its matted and framed ask for pictures of the items out of the frames. Most decent IP dealers now provide exact photo proof so that helps some but like a COA its still just a meaningless piece of paper so dont automatically assume its authentic just because it has one. The same goes for third party authenticators just don't assume its real because of a little sticker. Do your research everyone makes mistakes even authenticators. Well I hope that helps before your next purchase. Now on to this weeks successes. Our dry spell finally ended when we received our first success of the week on Friday. Dean Torrence of the legendary music group Jan and Dean signed both pictures we sent plus he added in a signed paper with info about his book. An amazing success IV always loved the songs "Surf City" and "The Little old lady from Pasadena" and it took just under a month to return. To finish off the week we received two returns Saturday. First after twenty days we received both pictures back signed from Dee Hartford she even signed and returned our letter. To finish off the day I received my Trek book back signed from author Diane Carey. She's written some of my favorite Star Trek books and it only took her about two weeks to return. She even sent an extra signed book so super bonus with this amazing success. That's it for this week. Have a great graphing weekend and ill be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.
